Define your word.
Have you guys ever gone on urbandictionary.com? It is an online dictionary that defines slang words. I have to admit that I am guilty and I have been on that site a few times. I think it is pretty interesting that someone has come up with such a site and that it is pretty active with viewers.
I went on that site to look up colloquialism. I have heard several words from people or friends that I was unfamiliar of and then I would find out that it is slang. Some of the words on that website are pretty ridiculous and are usually related to something sexual. Sometimes it is helpful for me, when talking with a group of people who use informal speech.
Here are a few examples:
Guap: (Can be found in one of Flo-Rida’s songs)
The word quap originated from the an african american slang term used on the streets of Harlem, New York to indicated large sums of money aquired through the sale of illicit drugs. It just amuses me how there are SO MANY WORDS. I would say there are words defined just as much as the dictionary. It is as if it is the cousin of the Websters Dictionary, but from the hood. It always makes me wonder where these words originate. It makes me wonder, who made this word up? What is even more interesting is that the creators actually get people to utilize such words. Such words can even be recognized in rap songs. I suppose listeners of rap are influenced by the lyrics, thus using the word because they feel that it is cool. In addition, some of the words are associated with dance moves. Some of words are even actual dictionary words, however; someone just altered the definition of it to have it relate to something gangster. And again I believe media has a big role withe influencing society, as we’ve repeatedly mentioned in class. Even down to the most awkward sayings, individuals will find away to make it “cool”. So if you ever hear an unfamiliar word, you should probably look it up at urbandictionary.com
