How young is too young…
I was commenting on the blogs and I read the one about Alfie Patton, the thirteen year old boy the UK who had a baby with a fifteen year old girl. When I first saw an article about this online I was really shocked that. I know that teen pregnancies happen all the time but this kid looks like he could be eight instead of thirteen. Then I realized that there are too many movies about little kids who are in relationship and have boyfriends and girlfriends and they also have relationship problems. These movies are entertaining and when you watch then the first thing that comes to mind is “aww how cute” but we don’t think about the consequences or the wrong messages the movies might be sending out to kids. Some time ago I saw Little Manhattan, a movie about Gabe, a boy who suddenly realizes he starts liking a girl he’s known since kindergarten. He starts to fall in love with her, but when she is partnered with another boy during karate class he thinks he is losing her so he declares his love for her. The girl tells him that she is not mature enough for love but they still hang out together. In the movie the young boy who is eleven starts to fall in love and he tries to start a relationship but is unable to because the girls he likes thinks she is not ready. Even though they don’t really go out when other young boys and girls see this movie they might feel that they need to have someone that loves them or that they need to start liking someone, because that is what everyone is doing. They don’t think about the problems that might arise with this or the consequences. They think that they can have a boyfriend or a girlfriend and that is it, they don’t think about what else cold happen and if they are not prepare they could too become young parents like Alfie did.
