I was looking through some videos when I came across one called East Timor’s First Female Dictator Hailed as step forward for Women. At first I thought, “Wow! A woman dictator, that is unbelievable.” That’s when I decided to watch it. At first the clip seemed to show a normal news segment when I soon realized that it was fake news. I have to admit that at first I did think it was real, until I noticed the funny name of the news segment, Onion News.
Then I started to think why this news report was so funny. Is it that fact that she is a woman dictator? If that is the case then does that mean that women are not capable of being evil dictators? I am not saying women should be dictators, but I was just wondering if this clip is undermining the potential of women. Is the purpose of this clip to make women seem weak or strong?
Or maybe this clip is funny because of the pictures of the dictator, Amivi Gama in the battlefield. If we were to see a man holding the power of Amivi Gama I assume we wouldn’t find it funny. Is it the fact that Amivi Gama by breaking that stereotype that women are not good fighters/brave etc what makes this clip funny. In the news report we see Amivi Gama setting villages on fire, holding the head of a beheaded man, talking with her troops and yet still being able to be a caring mother. Is this revering those women that do a lot of work and yet are good moms? This is what makes me wonder whether this news report is degrading to women.
Nevertheless, I personally did not find this clip degrading towards women. To be honest, I just thought it was funny and did not think much of it. However, these clips that we watch for granted sometimes have hidden ideas/beliefs that we have to look out for, such as with South Park/The Simpsons. I just hope that in the future women all around the globe can step up and be equal to men and maybe women’s power wouldn’t be so undermined in the media anymore.
